Details

Pferd American-pattern, half-round files are sold individually by length & cut, without handles.

Half-round "machinist" metal files are a workhorse tool in framebuilding shops old and new. Their round side can be used to hand miter thin-walled frame tubing and deburr the inside edges of tubes; their flat side can be used to chamfer, shape, and smooth various surfaces on frames and forks. We offer Pferd half-round metal files in the most useful lengths and cuts for framebuilders6, 8, 10, & 12-inch lengths in both Bastard and Second cut.

Comments

These Pferd workshop series files are a high-quality, albeit consumable-level item. When taken care of, they'll last many years before needing to be replaced. They are super consistent, cut well, and are highly regarded amongst even the most grizzled old-school builders. That said, don't expect to pass these down to your grandchildren some day. For the absolute best of the best, check out our Pferd Corinox files.

Technical Info

A half-round file's radius determines which diameter tubes it is best suited to mitering for. Read our primer on metal files for bicycle framebuilding, here.

Approx. File Radius Range
12" = 1.375-1.5" (34.9-38.1mm)
10" = 1.25-1.375" (31.8-34.9mm)
8" = 1-1.125" (25.4-28.6mm)
6" = .75-.875" (19-22mm)

These lengths and cuts will cover you well for 99% of framebuilding tasks. But hey, if you're going rogue and hand mitering tubes to fit T47 bottom bracket shells or some new, giant headtube standard, you may need a longer file (or some good self reflection).
